The Church of England Deaconess and Missionary Training House was established in as a residential school to prepare women workers for Deaconess and missionary service.

In the name was changed to the Anglican Women’s Training College (AWTC). For almost years, the city of Birmingham has been a key location for the training of clergy.

From Anglican clergy studied at the Queen's College and in the Methodist Church developed their own training facility at Handsworth College.
